Task cards or Scoot cards, whichever it is that you have, (check out my blog post here for the differences) are a great resource for formative and summative assessments. There are so many fun ways to use task cards, so once they are printed, cut, and laminated, you’re good to go for years.
I think task cards are important in your teaching because they allow students to get up and move around the room while they learn. Allowing students to move their bodies while they’re learning will help those kiddos who do not necessarily see great success from traditional instructional methods.
Let’s go over five fun ways to use task cards or scoot cards in your classroom to keep your kiddos engaged and having fun while learning.
Worried that you won’t be able to remember all these amazing ideas? Fear not! I have created Teacher Instruction Cards for you in English and French) so that you can have the instructions handy without having to return to this blog article.
If you’re interested in instruction cards for these games, I’ll send them (and other FREE weekly activities) to you!
And now, without further ado…
Activity 1 – Small group game
Player 2 will then need to complete the conjugation or the task on the card. If Player 2 gets the answer correct, they get to keep that card. But if Player 2 does not answer correctly, then Player 3 has the opportunity to answer the question. If they get it right, they keep the card, and if not then Player 4 attempts. Once Players 2-5 have had the opportunity to try to answer the card correctly, if no one gets it correct then Player 1 keeps the card.
Activity 2 – Small group game
In groups of 3-5 students, have your kiddos place the task cards face down and mix them around. One player is the Game Master. The Game Master will pull a card from the middle and read the card out loud to all players. All players will then be given 30 seconds to answer or complete the card on their lined paper or whiteboard. After 30 seconds, the Game Master will ask all students to show their answer. Either the Game Master or the students can keep track of their points. That’s the end of Round One.

Activity 3 – Whole class activity
Make sure the cards are mixed up and not in any type of numerical order. Have the kiddos take out a lined piece of paper and number each line 1 through however many cards you have. Next, have the kiddos wander around the room finding all the cards and answering them on their lined paper. I suggest playing music while they’re doing this as I find that it tends to bring down their chatter. Depending on the amount of cards you have, I would typically expect this to take 1 minute per card for the average student.
Activity 4 – Whole class activity
Distribute the task cards among your students so that every student has one card. Have your students get up with their card and find a partner. Student A will then read their card out loud to student B who will need to do the conjugation or complete the task on the card. Then student B will do the same for student A, they will read their card and student A will complete the task on the card. If you’d like, you can ask the students to find a partner based on specific traits, such as: “find a partner with the same colour eyes as you,” or “find a partner that’s the same height as you,” etc. This will make it a little bit more random and encourage the kiddos to talk to students that they don’t normally talk to.

Activity 5 – Individual activity
This activity is best for task cards where students are required to do more than simply conjugate the verb in parentheses. Ask the students to take a few minutes to wander around the room and take a look at the cards available. After 2 to 3 minutes, have the kiddos choose a task card that they would like to complete, remove it from the wall, and take it to their desk. Once completed, have them share their card and their completed tasks with a partner. Ask the kiddos to discuss the answer and to make sure that it’s correct. At this point, you may have the students exchange cards with someone and complete another task, or you may wish to have the students share the tasks that they completed with the class.
If you have more ideas for fun ways to use task cards, share them in the comments so that we can all learn from each other!
